Ranni Grama Panchayat in Pathanamthitta district has become the first local self-government body in Kerala to officially ban the burning of dry leaves as part of its commitment to environmental protection and sustainable waste management. The initiative was introduced to reduce air pollution, prevent accidental fires during the dry season, and encourage eco-friendly methods of disposing of biodegradable waste. Instead of burning leaves, residents are now encouraged to adopt environmentally responsible practices that benefit both the community and the environment.
Under the new initiative, households, institutions, and public establishments are encouraged to collect dry leaves and convert them into organic compost or natural fertilizer through compost pits and waste-processing units. The panchayat is also conducting awareness campaigns and providing guidance on composting techniques to help residents transform garden waste into nutrient-rich manure for agriculture, home gardens, and landscaping. This approach not only reduces waste but also promotes sustainable farming practices and improves soil fertility.
