The ecologically significant Kuttanad wetlands are facing an increasing threat from soil toxicity, raising concerns among farmers, environmental experts, and agricultural authorities. Studies indicate that the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs over the years has led to the accumulation of harmful substances in the soil. This has affected soil fertility, reduced crop productivity, and posed challenges to sustainable farming in one of Kerala’s most important agricultural regions, often referred to as the state’s “Rice Bowl.” Experts have warned that continued soil degradation could have long-term consequences for both agriculture and the fragile wetland ecosystem. The decline in soil quality not only impacts paddy cultivation but also affects water quality, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of thousands of farming families who depend on the wetlands. Agricultural scientists are conducting soil assessments and recommending measures such as reducing chemical inputs, adopting organic farming practices, improving drainage systems, and restoring soil health through eco-friendly cultivation methods.

During the event, speakers emphasized the growing demand for processed jackfruit products such as chips, flour, jams, pickles, sweets, and ready-to-eat snacks. They highlighted the importance of promoting value addition, reducing post-harvest losses, and creating better market opportunities for farmers through innovative processing techniques and branding initiatives.

In a significant shift from traditional farming practices, a group of women farmers in Upper Kuttanad, Kerala, has successfully adopted maize cultivation in place of conventional paddy farming. The initiative was introduced as an alternative to rice cultivation, which has become increasingly challenging due to unpredictable weather conditions, rising cultivation costs, labour shortages, and recurring floods. By experimenting with maize, the farmers have demonstrated a sustainable and profitable approach to agriculture while making better use of available farmland. The women farmers, working through self-help groups and agricultural cooperatives, received technical guidance and support from the Department of Agriculture and local agricultural experts. Maize was selected because of its shorter cultivation period, lower water requirements, and comparatively lower production costs. The crop has shown promising yields, providing farmers with improved income opportunities while also contributing to food security and agricultural diversification in the region.

Heavy monsoon rains have caused extensive damage to agricultural lands across Kerala, with the estimated crop loss nearing ₹100 crore. Several districts, including Pathanamthitta, witnessed widespread destruction of paddy fields, vegetable farms, banana plantations, rubber estates, and other agricultural crops due to continuous rainfall, flooding, and waterlogging. Thousands of farmers have been affected, suffering significant financial losses as standing crops were destroyed and agricultural activities came to a halt. In response to the growing crisis, the Kerala Government has requested ₹110 crore in financial assistance from the Central Government to support relief and rehabilitation efforts. The proposed aid is intended to compensate affected farmers, restore damaged farmland, repair irrigation infrastructure, and provide assistance for restarting agricultural activities. Officials from the Agriculture Department have been conducting field inspections to assess the extent of the damage and prepare detailed reports for relief distribution.

In an innovative step towards promoting sustainable agriculture and healthy nutrition, a tribal school in Pathanamthitta district has introduced terrace farming to support its midday meal program. The initiative enables students and teachers to cultivate fresh vegetables on the school’s rooftop, ensuring a regular supply of nutritious produce for daily meals. The project not only enhances the quality of food served to students but also encourages self-sufficiency and environmentally friendly farming practices. The terrace garden includes a variety of vegetables such as spinach, tomatoes, chilies, brinjals, okra, and other seasonal crops, all grown using organic farming methods. Students actively participate in planting, watering, and maintaining the garden under the guidance of teachers, gaining valuable hands-on experience in agriculture and environmental conservation. The initiative also serves as a practical learning platform, helping children understand the importance of sustainable farming, nutrition, and responsible use of natural resources.
