The ecologically significant Kuttanad wetlands are facing an increasing threat from soil toxicity, raising concerns among farmers, environmental experts, and agricultural authorities. Studies indicate that the excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and other agricultural inputs over the years has led to the accumulation of harmful substances in the soil. This has affected soil fertility, reduced crop productivity, and posed challenges to sustainable farming in one of Kerala’s most important agricultural regions, often referred to as the state’s “Rice Bowl.”
Experts have warned that continued soil degradation could have long-term consequences for both agriculture and the fragile wetland ecosystem. The decline in soil quality not only impacts paddy cultivation but also affects water quality, biodiversity, and the livelihoods of thousands of farming families who depend on the wetlands. Agricultural scientists are conducting soil assessments and recommending measures such as reducing chemical inputs, adopting organic farming practices, improving drainage systems, and restoring soil health through eco-friendly cultivation methods.
