To address the increasing incidents of human-elephant conflict in Pathanamthitta district, the Kerala Forest Department has begun adopting modern technology to improve wildlife monitoring and protect both people and animals. The initiative includes the use of advanced surveillance systems, GPS tracking, thermal cameras, drones, and real-time alert mechanisms to monitor elephant movements, particularly in forest fringe villages where encounters between humans and wild elephants are more frequent. The objective is to provide timely warnings to residents and reduce the risk of damage to lives, crops, and property.
As part of the project, forest officials are strengthening early warning systems by installing sensor-based monitoring devices and integrating them with mobile alert platforms and public announcement systems. Local communities are also being encouraged to report elephant sightings through dedicated communication channels, enabling forest personnel to respond quickly and guide elephants safely back into their natural habitats. These technological measures are expected to improve coordination between wildlife officials and local residents while minimizing the need for direct human intervention.
